New Year, New Decade, New You!

Jan 08, 2020

We’re just over a week into a new decade, and New Year’s resolutions are in full swing! Whether it’s eating better, making time for hobbies, or finally learning a new language, New Year’s resolutions abound.

Though it’s great to make a New Year's resolution, it doesn’t matter unless you follow through. Studies show that only a small percentage of people making New Year’s resolutions accomplish what they set out to do.  The problem is that most people get too ambitious and set unrealistic goals, without a plan to follow through and get shit done. Instead, tap into the energy and motivation that comes with the New Year, and harness it for real, actionable results.

What are some of the most common New Year’s resolutions?

  1. Make time for hobbies
  2. Get fit/workout more often
  3. Learn something new
  4. Save money
  5. Eat healthier
  6. Travel to new places
  7. Volunteer
  8. Spend more time with family and friends

Here are three essential tips to reclaim your New Year’s resolution.

  1. Pick one resolution

Some fail their resolution before making it out of the gate, by committing one simple mistake—they pick too many. There’s always a million ways you can improve yourself, and when the New Year rolls around, it’s tempting to try to do them all. The reality is that if you have 10 New Year’s resolutions, you have zero. Pinpoint one goal, and throw all your energy behind it.

  1. Make it a habit

Once you’ve nailed down your New Year’s resolution, the next step is to buckle down on the daily behaviours that will allow you to achieve it. Take the larger goal, and break it down to even more manageable chunks.

  1. Track your progress

At the beginning of the year, you’ll want to pour a ton of time and energy into coming up with the perfect plan to accomplish your New Year’s resolution. What’s even more important is that you obsessively revisit that plan, check your progress, and adapt to changing circumstances throughout the year.

Why not kick off your New Year with the inaugural Health and Wellness Expo powered by OEV Fitness, where you can find many tools and information to help you succeed with your New Year’s resolution. The event will takes place this Sunday, January 12 from 10am -5pm at Canada Life Place.

The Health & Wellness Expo will bring together local and commercial vendors with the intention of sharing ideas, techniques and products which encompass mind, body and spirit. Educational seminars and hands-on demonstrations will take place throughout the day and offer patrons the opportunity for an in-depth analysis of a variety of relevant topics.

A portion of the proceeds from the Health and Wellness Expo will go to support residents of Mount Hope in their Cycling Without Age program through the St. Joseph’s Health Care Foundation. Funds will go towards helping to purchase a specialty bicycle to enhance resident care and activity.

Childminding will be available for the duration of the event for children 18m to 5 years. The Kids Club will have arts and crafts tables, story/book corner, building blocks and other toys.
